Assessment details

Using your understanding of literacy and other key reading from the learning materials and wider research, write a discursive essay response that analyses and evaluates reading and writing processes and their relationship to curriculum and policy. Your response should consider or include:

  • definitions and descriptions of literacy, including what multi-literacies are
  • the similarities and differences between curriculum and assessment in Early Childhood and Primary education contexts
  • the rationale and discussion provided by government and others regarding the importance of literacy skills – both for children’s development and for meeting broader educational and societal goals
  • a discussion of how government describes or perceives the role of curriculum and assessment in meeting literacy objectives
  • a discussion and analysis of key curriculum, assessment and policy documents across Early Childhood and Primary curriculum in how they support developing literacy skills; in particular, reading and writing processes.

You will need to ensure you use relevant research to support your response. It is expected that you will discuss key policy documents including the Australian Curriculum andEarly Years Learning Framework in particular. You may also discuss a range of other policy documents such as (but not limited to) MCEETYA Declaration on the Educational Goals for Young Australians, and NAPLAN. Refer to the weekly support resources in the learning materials Activities and Assessment tab forfurther readings to support you, though you may also include your own wider research.

While the response is a discursive essay, you are able to present and argue a point of view, as long as you include a balanced discussion as part of the response.
